Scotland on Sunday has apologised to Andrew Brown, the Brand, Sustainability and External Relations Director at EDF Energy, after suggesting he had "pocketed" improper and/or corrupt payments claimed by his brother, the Prime Minister Gordon Brown, on Parliamentary expenses under the guise of payments for “cleaning services”.
In a Statement read at the High Court on 9 June Schillings solicitor Chris Scott said: "Statements issued by Downing Street on 8 and 9 May, prior to the publication of the Article, refuted entirely these suggestions and made clear that the Claimant was legitimately reimbursed for the Prime Minister's share of the costs of a cleaner who worked at both the Claimant’s and the Prime Minister's personal domestic properties. The libel contained in the Article was therefore entirely false."
Scotland on Sunday published a prominent page 2 apology in Scotland on Sunday on 24th May and online on the newspaper’s website. The newspaper has also undertaken not to repeat the allegation, to reimburse Mr. Brown his legal costs and to make a donation to the charity, the Jennifer Brown Research Fund.
