Wayne Rooney wins libel action
Download Press Release12 April 2006
Schillings represented Manchester United and England footballer Wayne Rooney in his successful libel action against The Sun.
In April last year The Sun sensationally accused our client Wayne Rooney of slapping his fiancance Coleen McLoughlin across the face. The News of the World later that week went on to allege that he punched her. News Group Newspapers which own The Sun and the News of the World has publicly apologised to Wayne Rooney and accepted that the allegations it made against him are completely false.
The Sun and the News of the World have both agreed to publish prominent apologies and to pay damages of £100,000 which Wayne Rooney will donate to charity. Schillings is delighted that by working closely with the client we have cleared his name and protected his reputation. This case demonstrates our expertise in protecting the reputations of individuals in addition to our work for companies and brands. The nature of Schillings work dictates that many of our successes are never made public but this latest result for Wayne Rooney shows the nature of the work Schillings specialise in.
