Noel Edmonds wins libel action

Download Press Release

12 April 2006

The Mail on Sunday has publicly apologised to the television presenter and successful businessman Noel Edmonds over a libellous article concerning his private life published in October last year.

The article made a number of false allegations and in particular claimed that Noel Edmonds had behaved improperly by beginning a relationship with Marjan Simmons and causing the break-up of her marriage.  The article also alleged that Noel Edmonds was using a romantic relationship with Marjan Simmons for PR reasons and that Mr. Edmonds orchestrated staged paparazzi photographs of himself and Ms. Simmons to obtain publicity for his new relationship.

A statement read in the High Court today by Mr. Edmonds' lawyer, John Kelly of Schillings, said: 'These allegations were not put to Mr. Edmonds or his representatives before publishing them. Had [The Mail on Sunday] done so, they would have been informed of their utter falsity. Following Mr. Edmonds' complaint, The Mail on Sunday now accepts that the story is entirely untrue.'

The Mail on Sunday has agreed to publish a prominent apology and retraction, pay substantial undisclosed damages to Mr. Edmonds and pay his legal costs.

Mr. Edmonds is satisfied that the record has now been set straight.
