Rinat Akhmetov secures apology from Kyiv Post
A Statement in Open Court was made in relation to a libel dispute between Rinat Akhmetov and the Kyiv Post, a prominent Ukrainian publication.
On 4 October 2007, the Kyiv Post published an article, written by Jed Sunden, which falsely claimed that Mr Akhmetov had unlawfully rigged two share auctions in Ukraine and that, as a result of these purportedly unlawful actions, the Claimant and his company, Systems Capital Management were able to “steal” billions of dollars. The allegations were entirely false and without any foundation. Jed Sunden and KP Publications, the publisher of the Kyiv Post, agreed to apologise for the embarrassment caused by the allegations, which it acknowledged were false. On 21 February 2008, the Kyiv Post published an apology to Mr Akhmetov on page 15 of the newspaper and online at its website.
As a mark of its regret, and in an effort to address the international effect of the libel, the Defendants have agreed to the reading of the Statement in Open Court in order to unequivocally apologise for the false allegations.
