Apology | 19 December 2008
Express Newspapers, the publishers of the Daily Star Sunday, has today apologised in court to David Walliams and Matt Lucas, the stars of Little Britain, over an article published in the Daily Star Sunday in September this year. The 14 September article 'Little Britain USA exposed’ suggested that Little Britain USA had caused uproar among “pink protest groups” - named in the article as the West Hollywood Gay and Lesbian Alliance and New York Gay Pride - who were said to be also demanding that HBO “pull the plug” on the series. In court today Express Newspapers accepted that these gay or lesbian groups do not appear to exist and that it was wrong of the paper to suggest that those quoted were spokespeople on behalf of the organisations.
Express Newspapers have offered to pay damages to Mr Walliams and Mr Lucas and to meet their legal costs as well as to publish an apology in the Daily Star Sunday and on its website.
Commenting on the apology, Little Britain's lawyer Rod Christie-Miller, Partner at Schillings said, "David and Matt are very pleased with this result. The article caused them considerable distress and it is satisfying that the newspaper has now accepted that it was wrong."
