The Daily Star has agreed to apologise to Andrew Cole (former England and Manchester United footballer) after an article was published on the front page of the Daily Star entitled “Footie Cole is Wife beater” together with another article published on the same day.
Proceedings were issued for defamation in the High Court and Express Newspapers has now agreed to apologise, to pay substantial damages and to pay Andrew Cole’s legal costs.
Mr Cole’s solicitors, Schillings, told Mr Justice Eady “This was a sensational front page article designed to draw readers to the newspaper. Sadly, it was simply wrong and caused our client immense distress.”
Mr Cole issued the following statement through his representatives:
“I brought this action in order to protect my reputation and the impact on my family caused by the sensationalist articles published by the Daily Star. The constant press attention made our lives untenable. I am happy my name has now been cleared, that the Daily Star has accepted there was no truth in the allegations and the matter resolved.”
