Quarantine orders - Legal notices

Quarantine notice

A quarantine notice (also known as a ‘Legal Notice’) is a notice advising third parties that a story that has been published, or is about to be published, is untrue.   It can be a highly effective way of stopping an untrue story from spreading widely.  It can be used, for example, when one newspaper has published a defamatory and untrue story and the victim wants to it from being repeated in other publications.  If other publishers repeat the untrue story even after they have been made aware by the Quarantine Notice that it’s false, they risk being accused of having acted out of ill will and so having to pay higher damages.
